Julio Sesma Romero is a Thoracic Surgeon in the Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery Unit (uniportal VATS approach for sublobar resection, bronchovascular reconstruction and surgery for locally advanced tumors; VATS and subxiphoid mediastinal resections), and Airway Surgery Unit (rigid bronchoscopy, laryngotracheal resections, pure tracheal resections, carinal resections and complex sleeve procedures) at the General University Hospital of Alicante, Spain.

He completed a degree in Medicine and Surgery at the Miguel Hernández de Elche University, Spain, receiving the honorable mention of 5-star excellence and was honoured with the National Archimedes Award for Young Researchers awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Education for his research activity in the Department of Physiology at the Miguel Hernández University. He entered the specialty of Thoracic Surgery through the national examination system, obtaining the best examination position among all opposing thoracic surgeons.

His specific Thoracic Surgery training took place in Spain, Asia and France. At the General University Hospital of Alicante he specialized in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, specifically in the field of sublobar resections, surgery for locally advanced tumors and bronchovascular reconstruction surgery using the uniportal VATS approach as routine. He also specialized in interventional and airway surgery, specifically laryngotracheal surgery, performing complex resection-reconstruction procedures at least one time per month. He completed his training with stays in international reference centers, such as the National Taiwan University Hospital (Taipei) where he was specifically trained in non intubated minimally invasive thoracic surgery, and at the Marie-Lanelongue Hospital (Paris), where he completed his training in extended oncological procedures, airway surgery and chest wall resection-reconstruction. He completed Thoracic Surgery Residency and fellow with the maximum score and he received the award for best resident granted by curriculum by the Illustrious Official College of Physicians, being the first time that a resident of Thoracic Surgery obtained this distinction.

Currently, he is a member of the European Society of Thoracic Surgery and a Member of the Spanish Society of Thoracic Surgery. He is the national coordinator of the comparative multicenter study on VATS sublobar resections of the Spanish Group of Video-assisted Thoracic Surgery. He has been part of the CITMIA team (Minimal invasive thoracic surgery Alicante) that develops its activity with special emphasis on complex uniportal VATS surgery at Hospital Perpeuto Socorro and Hospital Vistahermosa. He is a collaborating professor in the Department of Surgery at the Miguel Hernández University and a collaborating researcher in the Physiology Department at the Miguel Hernández University. He is Head Professor of Surgery and Chief Innovation Officer at Academia AMIR, international educational and study center that prepares doctors all around the world for national exams in order to obtain position to carry out medical residency. He is also a collaborating researcher at the ISABIAL (Institute of Health and Biomedical Research of Alicante). He is author of several international papers and presentations in national and international meetings related with is expertise area in Thoracic Surgery. He is also reviewer of multiple national and international journals in the field of Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Oncology.
